> About LH >> The Summer Academy at Lauralton Hall

Summer Academy at Lauralton Hall, begun in 2003 with a three year grant from the Connecticut Mercy Ministry Fund, offers a program of direct service to the materially poor.
The program provides academic instruction in the basic subject areas of math, reading and English to middle school girls. Students also have the opportunity for instruction in physical education and art. In past years Summer Academy students came from several schools in neighboring cities—Sacred Heart/St. Peter School and St. Rose of Lima School in New Haven, St. Raphael School and St. Peter School in Bridgeport and St. Martin de Porres Academy in Hamden.
In 2008 Lauralton Hall entered into partnership with St. Martin de Porres Academy to jointly manage and run Summer Academy at Lauralton Hall. Middle school girls from St. Martin de Porres Academy attend the two week program for which academic instruction is presented by teachers from both schools as well as Lauralton Hall student volunteers.
Each student invited to attend Summer Academy receives a full scholarship to the program which strives to encourage, challenge, support and broaden the experiences of the students while reinforcing their academic skills to help prepare them for success in the next school year.
Peggy McGowan, Health/PE teacher at Lauralton Hall, is Director of Summer Academy 2008, supported by Allison Rivera, manager of Special Programs at St. Martin de Porres Academy.
